To the Flame is a rage platformer about a moth on a perilous journey to meet god.
For this project, I was the sole artist and an assistant programmer.
Concept Art
Early environment and character explorations. The most important task was to design a character that would be endearing to the player. We wanted the moth to be cute, simple enough to read well at small scale, and to not feel out of place in a gloomy environment. We knew lighting would be a focus for the art direction, as seen here with the experiments with both shadows and glowing effects.

Finalized art direction. We wanted to inject as much color as possible despite the dark environment.

In Game Art
Background art assets. These background elements were done in a softer, more painterly style than the moth to push them further back.

Other art assets. Since these were "foreground" elements, they were done in the same style as the moth.

Final moth sprites. Having the "cloak" also serve as the moth's "wings" offered a lot of potential for variety in poses and the movement of the moth.

Game recordings

Other
Spider concept to final. The challenge was to make something monstrous and scary, but still comfortably occupy the same world as the much more cutesy moth. The spider was rigged in unity and is procedurally animated.
